Batman: Arkham City Review- The Dark Knight of Videogames

Batman: Arkham City is considered to be one of the best games of all time. It has a solid and well-told story, in-depth gameplay and complex bosses. These factors make it a great game.

The story of Arkham City begins with Bruce Wayne being imprisoned in Arkham City and after he finds his bat-suit, he attempts to stop the criminal under-bellies, stopping Protocol 10, finding the truth about Arkham City and finding a cure to save him from poisoned blood. The overall plot has great twists and turns throughout. Batman and his villains are fleshed out well and all their motivations make sense in the context of the story. The only issue with its story is that it is not well paced and it feels like a wild goose chase. The mission structure is also pretty simple and not that in-depth. The plot is solid, with exceptions of its pacing and mission structure.

The gameplay in Arkham City consists of open-world traversal, 3rd person combat, stealth encounters and boss fights. The open world itself is varied and has many distinct places that make the world recognisable. The only issue with the open-world is how it's designed as you have to travel across the entire map to get from one location to another, as there is a main tower the blocks of half the world. The traversal itself is simple, and it consists of grappling and gliding. The core mechanics of it are fun, but are not in-depth in any way. The combat is well made and complex. There are counters, normal attacks, stuns, dodges, utility belt usage, special moves and many other mechanics that add to complexity of combat, as you fight hordes of thugs, which can be varied enemy types with different weaknesses. The combat is satisfying and when you defeat enemies in a matter of seconds while keeping up your combo makes the entire system feel great. The stealth is not the most complex, but there are many opportunities to take out enemies and you can take them out by the versatilely of gadgets, as well as takedowns. The boss fights are a range of spectacle focussed fights, weakness exposing hits and stealth centred bosses. These are all challenging and are some of the best boss fights in video games. The most iconic boss fight is the one against Mr Freeze where you have to take him out in a variety of ways using gadgets and takedowns. This pushes p.layers to their limits of creativity and open ended thinking. The core gameplay loop in Arkham City is phenomenal.

Batman: Arkham City is one of the best superhero games ever made due to its fantastic gameplay and well-told story. Other than it's strange pacing, weak mission structure and slightly irritating open-world design, which are minor issues in the overall experience, Arkham City is peak.
