Resident Evil 4 is both a masterpiece and classic of horror, as well as action. There are many horror elements combined with action, great characters and campiness that create a fantastic game.
The plot starts when Leon Kennedy is sent to a village in Europe to save the President's daughter. After he enters the village he is captured and injected with parasitic organisms. Now Leon has to find and save Ashley, the President's daughter as well as find out and stop the infection. The story is simple with many campy, over the top and serious moments, causing the story to be an enjoyable experience. The main characters Leon, Ashley, Luis a man from the village, Ingrid the President's assistant and returning character Ada Wong are all well characterised. It is enjoyable to watch them all interact and they all have different relationships with Leon causing these interactions to be always fun. The villain interactions are also great as well consisting of Jack Krauser who has history with Leon, Bitores Mendez a large grunt, Roman Salazar who is basically a puppet literally as well as metaphorically and Osmund Saddler. Each main villain has a great motivation and it is again enjoyable to watch them interact with Leon. The experience of Resident Evil 4's story is consistently enjoyable.
The main gameplay loop consists of third person shooting with great exploration elements. The exploration is like a normal Resident Evil giving needed rewards for exploration. There are many set-pieces in Resident Evil 4 and these are mostly accompanied by quick-time events. These set-pieces are fantastic and the quick-time events never really get old in this game, because of the spectacle you see when you press the correct buttons. The boss fights are also all memorable either for the disturbing designs, the difficulty of the boss, or the gimmicks you can use to defeat them. These boss fights are some of the most varied I have ever experienced. The variety of enemy types also adds an extra challenge to the game and the varieties of these enemies allow for gameplay to be more thoughtful. The weapon variety is also great as each weapon has different advantages and disadvantages and should be used in different situations. Depending on where you shoot, you can hit a weak point of an enemy and do a takedown on them, which adds to combats complexity. Grenades are also varied, the Rocket Launcher is used a one time powerful weapon, which was a good idea so it didn't remain overpowered. Making sure your items did not fill your entire inventory was a good as any other Resident Evil and healing, as well as combining herbs is still enjoyable to do. The challenge and enjoyment of this gameplay is great.
Other than the a simple plot, Resident Evil perfects all gameplay elements. It is an enjoyable challenge with freedom to defeat enemies in the way you want to. This causes Resident Evil 4 to be one of the best 3rd person shooters. Resident Evil 4 is a masterpiece.
