In Utero is the last Nirvana album that was released when Kurt Cobain was alive. It is the most raw album Nirvana has released and it has dark themes, with many controversial topics. This album is masterful in how it handles these topics and showcases Nirvana in one of their best forms.
Production in In Utero ranges from basses, guitars and drums. These main three instruments are combined to create darkly toned tracks, that compliment the deep lyrical themes. The album is perfectly paced, not overstaying its welcome and is completely replayayble due to how it always gets to the main point by the end of each track. Each track is also uniquely produced and they all differ from each other creating an album with a very memorable tracklist. My personal favourite songs in terms of production are Heart-Shaped Box, Dumb and All Apologies. These tracks capture the perfect mix deep, dark production from the rest of the LP and make them slightly more smooth and listenable for replay. Due to the authenticity and varied elements of each track, it creates a tone unmatched by any other grunge album. Nirvana had perfected their sound in this album and has the effect that it is intended to have. In Utero has only unique and memorable tracks that make it one of the best produced on the rock scene.
Kurt Cobain has some of the most deep and dark lyrical themes in any album, and he portrays these themes in the best way possible. Kurt's lyricism is some of the best ever and he does this through his dark storytelling and how he explains these stories. His delivery is good for the most part, but when there is an abundant amount of yelling or screaming in a track, it can be irritating at times. This is the only issue I had with how raw this album was. The versatility of topics Kurt focuses on are niche, controversial, thought provoking and interesting. Each track focuses on terrible events or experiences in life and Kurt perfectly portrays these in the ways he delivers them. The most controversial songs are blunt, vivid and get straight to their point and Kurt uses these techniques to send messages perfectly. There are some tracks that use an abundant amount of metaphors and other english techniques and capture his point perfectly, making you think about the lyrics and can make you subconsciously realise what about atrocities in life. Overall, the lyrical themes are perfected by Kurt Cobain.
In Utero by Nirvana, is one of, if not the best grunge albums ever made. The production is. flawlessly varied and Kurt Cobain's lyrics are unmatched. There is a small flaw that I mentioned above, but it does not detract from the fact that In Utero is a masterpiece and classic.
