Silent Hill Review- The Definition Psychological Horror

Silent Hill is a horror classic. The ideas presented is Silent Hill are executed perfectly and the psychological horror can still scare to this day. Silent Hill has an horrific atmosphere, unmatched by any other game.

The plot of Silent Hill begins with the protagonist Harry Mason, getting in car crash. He is lost in a town called Silent Hill and is trying to find his daughter who went missing after the car crash. He meets Cybil Bennet a police officer, a woman named Dahlia in the church, a Doctor who seems to be hiding something, and a nurse named Lisa who has a strange vibe about her. The dialogue between most characters is simple and somewhat cringeworthy, this being the main flaw of its story. Each character is interesting and you can tell who you can trust and who you can't trust. Most of Silent Hill's story is told through disturbing imagery shown in gameplay. There are other plot points that I won't spoil because depending on the ending you receive, these points are vital to the story. The different endings are great and varied. Overall the plot is fine, but most of the story is told by its gameplay which I think benefits the experience in many ways.

Gameplay in Silent Hill involves many elements. There are simple shooting mechanics used to kill enemies and simple combat mechanics, which includes striking an enemy with a blunt weapon, such as a pipe, and using a normal or heavy attack. The simplicity in combat is a small flaw, but this is made up in enemy types. The enemy types are varied and all horrifying causing the game to be more intense as well as more challenging. The only other small issue with gameplay is the boss fights. The boss fights just consist of shooting an enemy until they die and avoiding attacks and there is not much complexity to them. Exploration is rewarded well and you can receive vital items for exploration. The map also gets updated by Harry as players explore areas, and this is beneficial as there is less chance of getting lost and it creates are more enjoyable experience. The world of Silent Hill is fantastically made and it perfectly connects. The atmosphere of the entire game is unmatched by anything else. The horror atmosphere never lets up and the soundtrack, as well as sound design makes it constantly tense. The Otherworld where the normal world is distorted is such a unique idea and it is implemented into gameplay perfectly, as it creates more disturbing imagery and a more intense atmosphere. The puzzles are also perfectly implemented and are always challenging, but not impossible and has all of them have a perfectly balanced difficulty. The minor flaws in the gameplay are nothing compared to good it is overall.

Other than some cringeworthy dialogue, simple bosses and core combat, Silent Hill is a master of horror. Imagery, atmosphere, puzzles, enemy types, characters, story being told through gameplay, The Otherworld and the world of Silent Hill itself are all perfectly made. Silent Hill is a psychological horror game classic and it is a masterpiece.
