Red Dead Redemption 2 tells one of the best stories of all time, but due to poorly designed mission structure and gameplay that does not innovate in any way it does fall at some points. It has one of the most vibrant open worlds and has an outstanding amount of detail.
The story begins with Arthur Morgan and his gang escaping after a robbery at Blackwater went wrong. The rest of the story follows the gang trying to get out the place they are in, but obviously things do not go to plan and that is how the story plays out at basic form. The plot develops all the range of characters in various ways, and if they die it is due to flaws they have in their personality. There is not a story that develops the amount of characters that Red Dead 2 does. Each character feels real due to the top notch acting and animation. The plot itself takes turns in directions I did not expect and everything is paced well until the impactful conclusion. The open world itself is varied, with many different events and well designed. The detail in the open world and the detail, as well as the interactions you make cause the story to be more realised. The detail is fantastic and ut has some of the best detail in any game. It also helps as these interactions can create missions and events that you wouldn't otherwise have, causing the story to be more in-depth. Therefore, the open world and detail in it adds to the perfectly told story.
The gameplay itself consists of shooting with a dead-eye mechanic which slows down time. To heal during mid shootout Arthur consumes a product. There is also simple combat mechanics where Arthur hits, blocks and dodges. The main gameplay loop is the shooting though. Mission structure is also stale by consisting of riding on a horse and speaking, shooting and repeat. This is the main core of Rockstar's mission design and this as well as its simple gameplay are Red Dead 2's only flaws. These issues are to common to ignore, but it doesn't mean all mission design is bad. There are many memorable set-pieces with fantastic detail and many memorable missions with emotional impact. The gameplay is fine for the most part, but there are issues with its simplicity, repetitiveness and mission structure.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a fantastic video game and is masterful in many ways mainly its story, characters, open world, acting, animations and detail. The issues that Red Dead 2 has are too noticeable to ignore and these issues consist of gameplay and mission structure. Although, Red Dead 2 is flawed, it has one of it not the best story in any video game and will be a future classic.
