Bayonetta 2 is one of, if not the best action and character action games of all time. The combat has be refined to perfection, the bosses are challenging as well as memorable, the characters have some of the most enjoyable interaction in any video-game, the spectacle and set-pieces are the best I have ever seen and the cutscenes are well acted, perfectly choreographed and over the top.
Bayonetta 2 has a slightly confusing and convoluted plot, but it ties loose ends from the first game and it gives more depth to each character. Each main and side character returns from the first game and are back to their usual antics. The story starts off as Bayonetta is shopping for Christmas and they she is attacked by angels, but her demon goes rogues and sends Jeanne to hell. The story continues as Bayonetta wants to got to hell to save Jeanne, she meets a child called Loki along the way and unravels the mystery of why the demons are going rogue. These events all relate to the first game and the past events of these games, while developing the characters as more complex. The story not the best ever, but it is solid and gives context to set-pieces, gameplay, bosses and fantastic combat. The action scenes choreographed in cutscenes are also fantastic and are even better than some of the best action movies of all time. The plot is solid, but the characters truly shine just like the first game and if it wasn't for such well written, humorous characters the story would not be as enjoyable.
The combat, set-pieces and bosses are the meat of Bayonetta 2. Before I mention the core gameplay features, the soundtrack compliments the combat in every way possible and I think every Bayonetta fan knows what I am talking about. Exploration is fantastic and the game gives you enough freedom to explore and not allow you to get completely lost. The art style of environments, backgrounds and the overall game are perfectly designed. The combat has been perfectly refined from the first game, creating more innovative, unique enemy types, such as new and old angels, as well as new demon enemy types. There is more weapon variety, upgrades, accessories, combos and expression of choice within the combat. There is also the new mechanic called the 'Umbran Climax' which grants moves and combos to be stronger, while adding demon summoning animations, which look cinematic during combat. There are also new finisher and taunt animations that you can do on enemies, which either look brutal or are comedic, respectively. The amount of set pieces and variety of bosses Bayonetta 2 is unmatched by any game I have played. Some bosses and set-pieces are even combined creating an even more phenomenal experience. I will not spoil any of the bosses or set-pieces, because these 2 factors combined with combat is where the game peaks.
Bayonetta 2 is an action masterpiece with peak combat, set-pieces and bosses. The only minor issue I have is that some cutscene dialogue bursts can be slightly boring but there are not many of these moments and they only last a few seconds. This minuscule flaw does not even matter because the overall experience of Bayonetta 2 can be summarised as perfect.
