If you look at Happy Gilmore as a normal film, it is objectively bad, but if you look at Happy Gilmore as a comedy and especially as an Adam Sandler comedy this movie is surprisingly good. The jokes throughout land the majority of the time and the running jokes throughout are consistently funny. The plot, characters and cinematography are all very simple, but that does not detract from the fact that this a very enjoyable comedy.
Happy Gilmore is a story about a hockey player who doesn't have skill on ice but has one of the strongest arms that helps him shoot into the goal. He is influenced to transfer to golfing and by the end he wants to win a tournament to help is grandma. The plot is simple and the side stories, such as his love interest and all the other characters are very simple, but that really isn't the point of the movie. There are some heartwarming moments and it is a feel good movie so they do work in that context. Overall I enjoyed the simple plot and characters, as it allowed me to turn my brain of and enjoy the movie.
Happy Gilmore is a comedy movie and if it didn't have good jokes I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but Happy Gilmore blends comedy in effective ways. It mixes slapstick comedy, comic violence, annoying repetitive one liners, insults, inside jokes, celebrity remarks, story centred laughs and just some stupid humour in there. All these small elements of comedy add up to create a fantastic culmination of great comedy and an abundant amount of laugh out loud moments throughout.
It might seem that because this is a comedy movie I am ignoring that is a fatally flawed movie which I am not doing. I am looking at this movie as though it is a comedy and am not looking at it as though it is some masterpiece or movie classic. For what Happy Gilmore is, it is a great comedy that got lots of laughs out of me and can easily get a lot of laughs out of anyone who watches it.
