Madvillainy Review- The Defining Underground Masterpiece
Madvillainy is MF Dooms most critically acclaimed album and it deserves all the praise it receives. This collaboration with Madlib creates a perfect combination of lyricism from Doom and production Madlib. There are many factors that add to how this LP is a classic underground rap album and a masterpiece of the genre.
Madlib's production in Madvillainy is some of the best in hip-hop history. The entire LP is produced by Madlib. There are many unique beats within the album and can be easily recognised if you have listened to the album. The amount of switch-ups within the beats are varied and are add a great sense of identity to Madvillainy. The instrumentals purely produced by Madlib are replayable and are all great listens, and I usually dislike songs without lyrics, but Madlib is an exception as he has varied beats. Every single track is either fantastically produced or has fantastic rhymes and the majority of tracks have both, causing the album to have replayability. The album does not over stay it's welcome and its 46 minute run time helps the album not be repetitive. Due to the unique production of each song, none of them are bad and all of them are some of the best in the rap genre. The samples Madlib uses for his beats and the samples he uses to portray Doom's character as a villain are perfectly implemented within this LP.
MF Doom's lyricism is basically unmatched in this LP. Every rhyme and is perfectly implemented and the lyrics are all vivid, entertaining and interesting. All the rhymes add to the lyrical themes of Madvillainy. Doom does not tell continuous stories often in Madvillainy, but when Doom's storytelling lines appear they are perfectly written. Every technique Doom uses in his verses are diverse and the amount of techniques he uses are basically uncountable. The versatility of topics Doom raps about is also unmatched by any album and they all focus on the cynical outlook of the alter ego Doom. Each line flows continuously on to the next creating a consistent overall flow. Doom's flow varies on every song, creating added incentive for replay value. Dooms delivery is dark, vivid, ominous, cynical and of course villainous. This delivery perfectly captures the villainous themes and mood of the album. This LP is basically a showcase of Doom's skills and talents as one of the best rappers ever.
Madvillainy is one of, if not the best underground rap albums of all time. It can also be conisdered one of the best rap albums, or even just one of the best LP's in all of music. Doom's skills as one of the best rappers are showcased consistently throughout this album and Madlib's uniquely produced beats are also a showcase of his talent. Overall, Madvillainy is a perfectly unique album and is a defining masterpiece in underground rap.
