The Shining is a masterpiece in psychological horror and one of the best films ever made. The amount of fear you feel, not from the amount of jump-scares but from the psychological elements causes the Shining to be a classic. There are so many elements of the film I can delve into, but it would take years.
The Shining is about a family who move to the Overlook Hotel so that Jack Torrence can have undo his writers block. Jack slowly turns mad, his son Danny starts to have more premonitions because of his 'shining' power and Wendy, Jack's wife is traumatised and doesn't know what to do. The representation of all 3 characters and how they evolve throughout the film is unmatched. Their characterisation is well portrayed and if it wasn't for the performances of Jack Nicholson, Shelly Duvall as well as Danny Lloyd the movie wouldn't have worked as well. The plot is basically the characterisation of these characters and how they endure these experiences. The way Kubrick tells the story through characters is perfect as they portray the horrors of what they experience.
The Shining has perfect production and all these factors add to The Shining's horror. The soundtrack is ominous and foreboding and is used to create a sense of fear among viewers. The pacing is perfect as it gives viewers time to breathe, as in one scene you may see a vivid, horrid image, in another you will see Jack conversing with people in the hotel and in the next Wendy will be traumatised over something Jack has done. Kubrick's cinematography creates a perfect sense of horror and helps viewers to feel fear the Kubrick intends the viewer to feel. The imagery in The Shining is both disturbing and horrific. This adds to the ambiguity of The Shining, which there is a lot of. There are many theories about The Shining and the events that take place, due to its ambiguity. This ambiguity also reaches it's ending, causing the film to be not just thought- provoking, but also having a perfect amount of ambiguity.
The Shining is one of the best psychological and horror movies ever made, if not the best of its genre. It is ambiguous as stated above leaving viewers haunted and thinking for hours causing an everlasting horror that no other movie can match.
The Shining is not just a classic, but is also a masterpiece in psychological horror.
