Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Review- What a Thrill
Metal Gear Solid is a perfect video game and one of the best of all time. It has an emotionally compelling story, well developed characters, open ended gameplay and fantastic bosses. There are many factors that make Metal Gear Solid 3 a classic and a masterpiece.
Metal Gear Solid 3 begins with Naked Snake, the future Big Boss, halo jumping out of an aeroplane and attempting to save a Russian scientist Sokolov and bring him back over the Iron Curtain. The Boss, Naked Snake's mentor shows up at the site as she reveals that she is defecting to the Soviet Union. A communist faction leader, Colonel Volgin recruited The Boss and her former comrades on the battlefield to take Sokolov. Naked Snake is beaten by The Boss and thrown off a cliff into water below and the areas is blown up by a Nuke. A week later, Naked Snake has to return and complete the missions of defeating The Boss, Volgin, The Cobra Unit, destroying the prototype of metal gear and saving Sokolov. The story from there on goes into spoiler territory, but the story is the best one I have ever experienced. All the elements I mentioned above are just the basics of the plot, it becomes more complicated, interesting, compelling and it all wraps up with a perfect ending. Every moment is paced perfectly, until it reaches its emotional conclusion. Side characters you can speak to on Codec can be well developed, depending on whether you speak to them or not, but if you do speak to them conversations are entertaining, and there are many memorable character moments. The side characters such as Eva and Revolver Ocelot are also well developed and are unique, as well as interesting. All the antagonists have great, personalities and have varied motivations which makes each of their boss fights more enjoyable. There is also great storytelling though gameplay and an example of this is one of the later boss fights that I won't spoil. The soundtrack also conveys emotional value to the story. Overall, there are no issues I have with Metal Gear Solid 3's story and Kojima made it basically perfect.
The amount of options players have in Metal Gear Solid 3's core stealth mechanics is only topped by MGSV, a sequel that came out 11 years later. The amount of weapons, CQC (grabbing and hitting) options, utility items and other options create a very enjoyable gameplay experience with limitless freedom of choice. There is also the camouflage mechanic that depending on how well your face camouflage and clothes blend in to the environment, and it also depends on if crouching or not. This mechanic is innovative and there are more survival systems like this one. There is a healing system, that depending on the injury Snake has, players have to treat the wound with certain products. The food mechanic where you hunt for food to gain stamina and health, is also unique as food might give different status effects, or if rotten can poison you and drain stamina. There are many more features to the camouflage, treatment and food mechanics in Metal Gear Solid 3, but I cannot list them all as the depth of these mechanics would take too long to explain as well as explaining how good they are. There is fantastic exploration mechanics that reward you for exploring. Level, as well as mission design is perfectly worked throughout the game and it gives you enough options to approach a situation as a player wants. The set-pieces in the game are also amazingly designed and are always enjoyable to play through. The AI is also responsive, enjoyable to interact with and mess around with. The AI is also perfectly balanced throughout the entire experience. Talking about AI, the boss AI is consistently great. These bosses are some of the most inspired and some of the best I have ever played against in any video game. The bosses have many options to beat are some of the best in all video games. The more complex bosses are more fun to fight, but if a boss is less complex, it is usually done due to the emotional effect of defeating them. Kojima perfected his gameplay ideas in Metal Gear Solid 3.
Metal Gear Solid 3 is both a masterpiece and classic because of its innovative gameplay designs and perfect story. To summarise it Metal Gear Solid 3 is a thrill.
