Psycho Review- The Godfather of Horror

Psycho is one of the most iconic movies of all time and there are a few reasons for this. Firstly it basically created horror, it has one of the best plot twists of all time and has unmatched suspense. Psycho is definitely one of Hitchcock's best movies and it can be considered one of the greatest of all time.

Marion Crane steals money from her company and decides to hide at a motel by the side of the road and a man called Norman Bates owns it. The story after this has a surprising protagonist swap some dramatic scenes, emotional scenes and one of the best plot twits in cinematic history. Before Marion reaches the motel the movie is a little bit slow, but the suspense once in the motel is untouchable compared to most horror movies. The characters really shine in this movie and step up to the occasion that is presented to them. Norman Bates is easily the most memorable character and people who have seen Psycho will know why. The ending where everything about the Psycho's personality is revealed was unnecessary and ruined ruined some of the film. If Hitchcock, did not explain Psycho's motivations the movie would have ended on a more chilling note, although it already ended with thought provoking suspense.

The way Hitchcock created a sense of isolation in the motel and the area where it was set was as iconic as the character of Psycho itself. The motel on a rainy dark, damp night, alone with only Norman Bates and his mother was a perfect set up for horror. The cinematography and camera techniques used are also intelligently used. Throughout the movie you believe the killer to be someone who it isn't because the character can't see the killer's face and neither can the viewer. The camera angles also cause a sense of tension as you can realise Psycho dominates in most situations.

Psycho is a classic and a masterpiece because of how it revolutionised horror, thrillers, slashers and psychological movies. It intertwines these features with a fantastic plot twist, amazing protagonists and antagonists as well as a well-told plot. The only issues were the all revealing ending and slow beginning. Otherwise, Psycho is a masterful classic.
